Conceived in the darkest days of World War II, when it was necessary to revive in the hearts of young people the flame of freedom against the false prestige of totalitarian barbarism, this has become a classic in the history of education. Henri-Irénée Marrou (1904-1977), distinguished historian of culture and ancient Christianity, was born in Marseille and studied all'École Normale Supérieure in Paris and Rome all'École Francaise. It was professor of ancient history in Montpellier and Lyon and professor of history of Christianity at the Sorbonne. Among his works: Saint Augustin et la fin de la culture antique (1932), Saint Augustin et l'augustinisme (1952), De la connaissance historique (1954), Théologie de l'histoire (1968).
