Conceived in the darkest days of World War II, when it was necessary to revive in the hearts of young people the flame of freedom against the false prestige of totalitarian barbarism, this has become a classic in the history of education. Alongside the famous Paideia of Jaeger, is the most important text as a whole - as was written - on classical. This is not really a manual of pedagogical theory or history of schools greek-roman, but a historical research and an analysis of all components of Greek culture, Roman and Christian. The solid archaeological expertise, philological and educational for the author illuminates from within each page. Henri-Irénée Marrou (1904-1977), distinguished historian of culture and ancient Christianity, was born in Marseille and studied all'École Normale Supérieure in Paris and Rome all'École Francaise. It was professor of ancient history in Montpellier and Lyon and professor of history of Christianity at the Sorbonne. Among his works: Saint Augustin et la fin de la culture antique (1932), Saint Augustin et l'augustinisme (1952), De la connaissance historique (1954), Théologie de l'histoire (1968).
